Goddess Lakshmi: Who She Is, Her Symbols, Mantras and Puja

Who Goddess Lakshmi is: goddess of wealth and prosperity, wife of Vishnu, born from the ocean of milk. Her symbols, eight forms, mantras and Diwali puja.

The short answer

Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity and good fortune, and the wife of Vishnu.

She is said to have risen from the ocean of milk when the gods and demons churned it for the nectar of immortality. She is shown seated on a lotus, often with gold coins flowing from her hands and elephants beside her. Hindus honor her above all at Diwali with Lakshmi puja and aarti. Below are 14 of her mantras from Diya's prayer library, with meanings.

Who is Goddess Lakshmi?

Lakshmi (also Laxmi, Shri or Sri) is the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity and good fortune. She is the wife of Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. When Vishnu comes to earth as an avatar, Lakshmi comes with him: as Sita beside Rama and as Rukmini beside Krishna.

Her best-known story is her birth. When the gods (devas) and demons churned the cosmic ocean of milk to bring up amrita, the nectar of immortality, Lakshmi rose out of the ocean, and she chose Vishnu.

The name Lakshmi comes from the Sanskrit root laksh, "to understand and know", and also "goal" or "aim". She is the goddess who helps people reach their aims, material and spiritual.

What does Lakshmi look like? Her symbols

  • The lotus. Lakshmi is shown sitting or standing on a lotus, with lotuses in her hands. Many of her names, such as Padma, Kamala and Ambuja, mean "lotus".
  • Gold coins. As the goddess of prosperity, she is often shown with gold coins spilling from her hands.
  • Elephants. Elephants often stand behind her, pouring water. They represent power and hard work.
  • Red and gold. She usually wears a red sari with gold thread.

See Hindu symbols and their meanings for what the lotus means across Hinduism.

What are the eight forms of Lakshmi?

Because prosperity comes in many kinds, Lakshmi gives each kind through one of eight forms, the Ashta Lakshmi:

FormThe wealth she gives
Adi LakshmiThe first, primordial form; spiritual wealth and liberation
Dhana LakshmiMoney and gold, and the willpower and perseverance to earn them
Dhanya LakshmiGrain, food and agricultural wealth
Gaja LakshmiAnimal wealth, power and royalty
Santana LakshmiChildren and family
Veera (Dhairya) LakshmiCourage and strength
Vijaya LakshmiVictory and success
Vidya LakshmiKnowledge and learning

The hymn to all eight is the Ashta Lakshmi Stotram.

  2. Place a picture or murti of Lakshmi (with Ganesha, who is honored first).
  3. Offer flowers, a lotus if you can, and something sweet.
  4. Chant Om Shri Mahalakshmyai Namah 11 or 108 times.
