Why does the date of Diwali change every year?

Diwali, "a row of lights", celebrates the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and light over darkness. It is set by the Hindu lunar calendar: Lakshmi Puja falls on the new moon of Kartik. Lunar months do not line up with the solar year, so the date moves between mid-October and mid-November. And because the moon's phases happen at one moment worldwide, the date can differ by a day between India and the US.
