How this is calculated
Every value on this page is computed for the city center from the positions of the sun and moon, using the open-source astronomy-engine library, and recomputed every hour.
- Sunrise and sunset are the moments the top edge of the sun crosses the horizon, allowing for atmospheric refraction.
- Tithi is the lunar day. It is found from the angle between the moon and the sun: every 12 degrees is one tithi, 30 in a lunar month. The tithi shown is the one in force at sunrise, which is the tithi most calendars name for the day.
- Rahu kalam is one of eight equal parts of the time from sunrise to sunset. Which part depends on the weekday: the 8th on Sunday, 2nd on Monday, 7th on Tuesday, 5th on Wednesday, 6th on Thursday, 4th on Friday and 3rd on Saturday.
- Choghadiya divides the day into the same eight parts, named in a fixed cycle that starts from a different name each weekday.
We checked these calculations against Drik Panchang for 10 US cities on three dates (November 2026, the December solstice and March 2027, after the change to daylight time): all 30 sunrises and rahu kalams agreed within two minutes, and every tithi matched. Temples and family calendars may follow a different tradition or location, so for a fast or a puja time, check the calendar of your temple.
